By Kassandra Lamb ~ Over on our Facebook readers’ group today, Vinnie Hansen has a discussion going on “writing the other.” How do authors avoid stereotypes and unintended offensiveness when writing about cultures, religions, ethnic backgrounds other than their own?
It isn’t easy!
And yet “diversity” is one of the big buzz words in the writerly world right now. There is pressure for more diverse characters and topics in our stories.
As a member of several privileged groups—white, middle class, Protestant Christian—I feel like I’m not doing enough for my fellow citizens, members of less privileged groups, if I’m not creating a story world that is as rich with diverse people and experiences as the real world is.
If you’re interested in how we authors traverse the tricky path of writing the other, check out this great post on Fiction University, 7 Tips for Writing Across Cultures.
